MARTÍNEZ MONTAÑÉS EXHIBITION IN SEVILLA, MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS

27.01.2020

In November 2019, the Museum of Fine Arts in Seville inaugurated the great exhibition dedicated to the sculptor Juan Martínez Montañés on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of his birth, which can be seen on March 15 to 2020.

This is the first monographic exhibition that the city dedicates to the sculptor known as "god of wood" and who through a selection of 58 works presents him as one of the great masters of the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque.

The objective of «Montañés, teacher of masters», is to rediscover the sculptor as a Baroque master who created his works with a very thorough technique, but without following the craft codes, but rather being carried away by his artist instinct. His work is not the result of an apprenticeship close to the artisan or attached to the traditional, but the result of an intellectual work similar to what other of his contemporaries led to the score or the canvas.

The exhibition places at the height of the visitor a careful selection of works by the artist, all of them in wood - most of American cedar - in good condition or restored for the occasion, a total of eighteen, by the Fine Arts technicians in the museum workshop.

The objective is that the visitor can see the exceptional technique and creativity of the sculptor, appreciable, for example, in the arm of the "San Cristobal con Niño", of El Salvador, which Cano compared with the "Hercules Farnesio".
